Volunteer opportunities abound at Trinity and most can be found on The Committees and Ministries pages as well as the Liturgical Assistants pages. However there are others, both inreach and outreach, that might interest newcomers and long-time parishioners:
Mercy Learning Center in Bridgeport needs tutors for English as a Second Language and Math, child care aides, gardening help, facility maintenance, enrichment instructors, and office aides. Tutors can work with individual students or with a class. This is a rewarding opportunity for those who enjoy working with others at one of the best-run non-profit organizations in the area. Contact Diane Holmes at 203-334-6699 or for more information about this outstanding organization, go to http://www.mercylearningcenter.org.
Volunteers are needed to staff the Trinity Reception Office. Please call Cassia Ward, the Parish Administrator at 203-255-0454, ext. 300 if you are able to help with this. This involves answering the telephone, greeting visitors, and doing assorted tasks that assist the Administrator and make the offices run smoothly. It is a good way to learn about Trinity and meet the parishioners who come through there.
The Trinity Handymen are looking for men and women who have home maintenance or gardening skills to assist parishioners who are no longer physically or financially able to do manage some of these projects themselves: simple plumbing, lifting, ordinary maintenance skills. If you can help out, please call the Handymen Hotline 203-418-7559.
Honduras Missions and Scholarship Committee: Beginning in 2000 Trinity has consistently sent mission trips and formed relationships with congregations of the Episcopal Diocese of Honduras. Ninety-six Trinity parishioners have made nine trips over the years with the next one planned for 2013. Trinity has supported scholarship students in Honduras since 2002 as an outgrowth of our service trips to San Lucas Church, our sister parish. The Honduran government only provides education through 6th grade, then funding is necessary for books, uniforms and transportation. The sum is $125 a year, a modest amount to us, but insurmountable for the very poor that San Lucas Parish serves. Over the years Trinity Southport has aided over 100 students and since we return to Honduras on a regular basis we are able to meet with our students and encourage them on in their educational pursuits, so much the key to elevating them from poverty. Hospice at Home, a program of Visiting Nurse Services, Inc., wants volunteers to support the hos-pice/palliative care programs in their Trumbull and Oxford areas. Volunteers perform a variety of duties, including support to patients and families with visits, telephone calls, or running errands. Surviving family members are encouraged to wait at least one year following a loved one’s death before becoming a volunteer. Orientation classes at the VNS office at 40 Lindeman Drive, Trumbull begin Tuesday, October 12, from 9:00 am until 12:30 pm for six consecutive Tuesdays.
