Dr. Iain Quinn grew up as a chorister at Llandaff Cathedral in Wales, with early studies on the piano, trumpet, and organ. At fourteen he was appointed Organist at St. Michael’s Theological College, Llandaff and later joined the faculty of the Blackheath Conservatoire, London.
In 1994 he moved to the US to pursue advanced studies at The Juilliard School and later The Hartt School-University of Hartford (BM summa cum laude) and the Institute of Sacred Music, Yale University (MM) and the University of Durham, UK, (Ph.D) and holds the diplomas of Fellow of the Royal College of Organists and Fellow of the Royal Schools of Music. In 2012 he was a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University.
He has served parishes in New York City (Church of the Intercession and Holy Name of Jesus RC Church) and Connecticut (Trinity Episcopal Church, Hartford) and from 2005-2010 was Director of Music and Organist at the Cathedral of St John, Albuquerque, New Mexico. In Hartford he founded the Trinity Chorister Program (now Choir School of Hartford) which received a Proclamation from Governor Jodi Rell. The program drew families from across the city and beyond, and remains one of the most respected chorister programs in the region.
Iain has led choir tours to Saint Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, and the Cathedral of St. John Divine, New York City, Washington National Cathedral, and St George’s Chapel, Windsor and Canterbury Cathedral. During his tenure in Albuquerque he recorded two CDs with the cathedral choir that garnered high critical praise, including a five star review in Choir and Organ magazine.
As an organist he has performed concerts throughout the UK, Europe, North America, Australia, Belarus, Brazil, Hong Kong, Iceland, Japan and Russia. He has recorded eleven commercially released CDs many including premiere recordings of new or rare works. His recordings appear on Chandos, Hyperion and Raven CD.
As a composer his works have been performed at several festivals and by choirs including Trinity College, Cambridge, Westminster Cathedral, London, St Luke in the Fields, St. Mary the Virgin, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York City. In 2011 he was a Visiting Composer at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. In his work as a musicologist he has recently published editions of the organ works of Samuel Barber (G. Schirmer) and Carl Czerny (A-R Editions). He has lectured at universities throughout the USA and for the American Musicological Society and Royal Musical Association.
