Trinity offers many occasions when parishioners of all ages come together as a community for fellowship and friendship. Our Community is about what we do and what we offer that benefits not only our Trinity community but also the community at large. The clergy and the wardens always know who is currently in charge of these events and will lead you to them if you want to help.
Regular Community EventsFirst Sunday Breakfasts:On the first Sunday of almost every month from October through May breakfast is served in the Parish Hall between the services. Different groups get together each month to plan, purchase the food, prepare, serve, and clean up the breakfasts. Sometimes the Vestry, the Men’s Group, or the Youth Group, among others, take this on as a group project. There is a small charge for this to cover expenses, but it is the efforts of the various parish committees or groups that make it possible. The menu varies from pancakes and sausages to many other favorites. Often the breakfasts are focused on the time of the year, such as Advent or All Saint’s Day, and there are tables and exhibits by the Church School for family participation. Ministry Fair:Early in September we have a Ministry Fair and all of the Committees and Ministries have representatives at tables in the Parish Hall after the services, giving all parishioners a chance to learn about the many opportunities to serve and participate at Trinity. There are usually over forty of these groups represented and there are refreshments and a chance to meet the people who are active in various capacities. It is also an opportunity to sign up for any committee or ministry that appeals to you, since all of our groups welcome new members. Periodically other multi-generational events take place as well, and we are always open to suggestions and offers of leadership for events that include all generations. In the past we have had a Lobster Fest at the beach, and we have also presented major musical productions that included all ages and whole families performing together, such as our productions of Benjamin Britten’s Noye’s Fludde and the Boar’s Head and Yule Log Festival at Epiphany. We also have the periodic fund-raisers sponsored by various groups, such as the ECW, to raise money for special projects. Special Days
Mardi Gras:On Mardi Gras, there is always a parish party, often a potluck supper, with trumpets and traditional Mardi Gras costumes, music and favors. In 2011 the Young Women's Fellowship prepared a Parish Breakfast. Click on the photo to see the slide show of the Phat Sunday Breakfast in March 2011. Palm Sunday:On Palm Sunday, we gather at the Perry Green by Southport Harbor and after the palms are blessed, we walk up Center Street to the church following the choir and singing the appropriate hymns. We often also have bagpipers and other special props to lead the processional up from the Green and down the aisle. Parish Picnic:The Parish Picnic is sponsored by the Men’s Group and the Church School and takes place at the end of the church school year in June. The men grill hamburgers and hot dogs and the rest of the parish bring salads and desserts. Tables are set up out on the church lawn and there are games for the young children and fellowship for all the adults. It is a wonderful way to end the church school year and is always a huge success. The Blessing of the Animals:The Blessing of the Animals takes place every year at a service in the nave of the church and is always well attended! This service takes place in October and is conducted in remembrance of St Francis of Assisi and his love of all creatures. St. Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things. “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” There is a special bond between people and their pets and at Trinity we include stuffed animals as well as live ones. There are treats for all varieties of animal family members as well as their owners and we have had an astonishing variety arrive to be welcomed into the church family. Click the photo at left to see a slideshow of animals welcomed at the church to receive their blessing.
Pentecost: We often celebrate Pentecost with five other churches at St John’s in Bridgeport. The service is done in many languages and there are balloons and strawberry shortcake after the service.
All Saint's Sunday: On All Saint's Sunday we light candles in the chancel in memory of the Saints we have known and loved. They are lighted, one from the others, as we approach the altar for the Holy Eucharist. Veteran’s Day:On Veteran’s Day we remember those who have served our country and often have representatives from The Wounded Marines as our guests. |
